The Non Invasive Process Known as Microdermabrasion

By Mats Sumellin

Microdermabrasion is a skin enhancement procedure that is becoming more well known over time. This noninvasive treatment is painless, and most of all, affordable. For people who don't wish to have more serious plastic surgery, or injections and laser options, this is a choice that makes sense.

Microdermabrasion can soften fine lines and wrinkles, decrease pore size, help smooth coarsely textured skin, reduce superficial hyper-pigmentation (age spots), and decrease the appearance of scarring. After the process is completed, skin will be able to allow creams to go deeper to have more of an effect to make skin look younger, by promoting the creation of collagen.

Microdermabrasion is a powerful exfoliation performed with special equipment. This process removes the uppermost layer of dead skin cells from the skin.

The crystal microdermabrasion device consists of a compressor that draws in air through a hand-held wand. As the skin is touched by the wand, the result is a vacuum effect. Aluminum oxide crystals are directed across the skin's surface, picking up dead surface skin cells along the way. A separate tube on the wand simply sucks the air along with the dead skin cells and crystals into the machine.

There is also another type of microdermabrasion that uses a diamond-tip and a vacuum, but crystals are not necessary for this kind. The diamond tip itself exfoliates the skin and the vacuum whisks the dead skin away. Different kinds of tips are selected based on the type of skin the patient has, and how uneven the texture is. Diamond-tip microdermabrasion is less uncomfortable, but achieves the same results as crystal microdermabrasion. For sensitive skin, this is the more beneficial option.

The effects of this process are already very striking, and if the technician is skilled and experienced, it is even better. For skin that is rougher, more treatments will be required for the desired effect, and in most cases several treatments are necessary. After the first treatment is completed, a clearer picture of the overall treatment process will be planned out, and implemented, depending on skin condition among other factors. The first treatments usually bring very positive results and make a patient happy, but to make sure all issues with skin complexion are addressed, more sessions are typically needed. In most cases, every several months a patient should have another session in order to have the effects be ongoing. And because the machine can be adjusted depending on skin type and condition, even people with sensitive skin can get a treatment from a skilled professional.

Although microdermabrasion is an extremely popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, it is not completely free from side effects. Basically, it's like using a sandblaster on the skin, so naturally, it will react to that temporarily. Skin sensitivity sometimes occurs, along with minimal bruising and skin can be slightly red and tight feeling. This is normal and will only last several hours. Abrasions that are relatively minor have been known to occur, isolated minor bleeding can also happen. Anaesthetics are not necessary with microdermabrasion, no dangerous chemicals are involved on the sensitive skin on your face, and there are minimal risks involved. When compared to facial peels that use lasers or chemical agents it is much safer.
