Good Information About Rambo Rugs

By Paulette Mason

Protection must sometimes be provided to animals particularly the equine family against adverse weather elements and insects. This kind of protection is provided using certain kinds of blankets of coats called Rambo rugs. They vary in shape and size to ensure that they can cover specific parts only or the entire body from chest to the rump when it is necessary. Straps are incorporated to maintain them in place while allowing the horse free movement.

There are many different types of Rambo blankets in use today. Most of them have straps and buckles at the front while other designs are closed. Closed designs can only be worn on the horse by slipping them over the head. Straps and buckles are secured under the belly. Sideways movement of the blanket is sometimes prevented by small straps that are looped lightly around the hind limbs.

These products are made from many different materials. Major materials in use however include cotton, leather, wool, canvas, polar fleece, and poly-cotton among many others. The thickness of the fabric is determined by the kind of weather elements that protection is needed against. In very cold areas, several layers of different materials may be knit together to make a single product. The underside is normally made smooth to avoid hurting the horse while the outer side is made of waterproof material.

The major types of blankets in use today include fly sheets, rug liners, summer sheets, cooler, exercise, fleece, anti-sweat, stable, travel, turnout, and under rugs. Each type of rug is used for a specific purpose under specific weather conditions. Horses with fully-grown winter coats are capable of maintaining proper body temperatures even at atmospheric temperatures of below zero degrees. Blankets are however still important because of other factors such as humidity, rain, and wind chill.

The winter coat on horses becomes less effective when it is fully soaked in water from the rain. This leaves the animal cold and chilled to the skin. Also, strong winds can lift the coat allowing cold air to reach the unprotected skin. In summer, on the other hand, strong sun beams can cause a lot of discomfort when not protected against. For the reasons named above and many more, protecting horses with blankets is a thoughtful idea.

Various biting insects are another primary nuisance to the equine family of animals. Rugs are primarily used during summer to keep off such insects. Fly rugs are the best for providing a cover against insects as well as maintaining adequate airflow to the skin. Some equines react severely to insect bites hence caution must be exercised.

Old animals are also more susceptible to being affected by cold than young ones. It is therefore wise to rug old and very young animals to help them with maintenance of right body temperature. Ailing horses should also be protected from adverse weather elements at all times.

There are many factors that affect the costs of Rambo blankets. The major factors however include fabric used, application, quality, additional functionalities and accessories, and size. To ensure proper comfort of the animal, one should invest in the best rugs available on the market. The purchased product must also be certified.
