Dentistry has been traced back to as early as 5000 BC where it was stated that tooth worms where the cause of dental decay. Then in 2600 BC the death of Hesy-Re was described as the greatest who dealt with teeth. This is the earliest known reference of a dentist. In today's age the Atlanta DDS has improved tenfold compared to the tools that were used all those years ago.

From 1750 BC an Egyptian text was found that referred to the diseases of teeth and a few remedies that helped to alleviate the pain it caused. Then from 500 to 300 BC both Aristotle and Hippocrates wrote about the treatment of tooth decay as well as gum diseases and how the affected teeth where pulled with forceps. There was also mention of how wires were used in keeping loose teeth as well as broken jaw bones together.

While still in high school it is advisable to take science as well as maths and enrolling in a college prep class could be an advantage. The subjects for college should include algebra, biology, chemistry and liberal arts. Once in college it is not that important to major in science but it is very important that the pre dental science requirements be completed. Some other courses once in college should be on biochemistry, physics, biology as well as organic and inorganic chemistry.

From 700 to 1575 the silver paste was introduced as well as the two groups which were divided into surgeons whom were extensively trained to perform difficult operations as well as those who were taught to perform the more normal everyday services. Later the first book entitled "The little medicinal book for all kinds of diseases and infirmities of the teeth" was written. It covered all the normal procedures such as extractions, drillings as well as the replacement of gold fillings.

Later Pierre Fauchard who was a French surgeon published another book and was named the father of modern dentistry as it described the oral structure and functions as well as therapeutic and operation techniques and construction. In 1746 Clause Mouton discovered that the gold crown can be changed to enamel which made the appearance of fillings much more appealing. Fifteen years later the first medically trained dentist arrived in America from England and set up his practise.

In 1789 Nicolas Dubois de Chemant was the first to administer porcelain teeth and John Greenwood constructed the first dental foot engine. He changed his mom's foot treadle spinning wheel to become a drill. The first dentists chair was also made by Josia Flagg and was able to have adjustments made to the headrest as well as extensions to hold all the required instruments.

As time progressed into the nineteenth century the first dental book was published as well as the developed of porcelain teeth. The first reclining chair was invented by James Snell and a hardening rubber was made-up which was the base for false teeth. In 1840 the first dental school was founded by Horace Hayden and Chapin Harris and the first national dental organization was founded.

The twentieth century bought on the first aesthetic named Novocain as well as the invention of lost wax. In 1911 the first US Army Dental corps was established and two years later the Fones Clinic opened its doors. From then on the leaps and bounds of dentistry have evolved to what it is today.
